Armenian Parliament Considers Establishing Navasard Day
Armenian lawmakers consider establishing Navasard Day
The Armenian Parliament discussed a bill Tuesday that would designate August 11 as the Day of National Traditions, Culture and Armenian Unity, reviving observance of Navasard, the ancient Armenian New Year. Introduced by MP Gegham Nazaryan, the proposal seeks to add the date to Armenia's Law on Holidays and Commemoration Days.
The observance would remain a working day focused on promoting Armenian cultural heritage and national unity. According to the bill's author, celebrating Navasard in modern form could strengthen awareness of national values and encourage diaspora engagement, particularly through increased summer travel to Armenia.
The National Assembly Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs assessed the proposal positively. Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Lusine Kocharyan said the government would submit recommendations before the bill's second reading.
