Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia must adapt its long-term energy strategy to account for growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence projects and data centers expected to develop in the country.

Pashinyan addressed concerns raised by Azerbaijan's president about closing Armenia's Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, confirming the facility's scheduled shutdown reflects longstanding agreements. He emphasized the closure is not a new development.

The prime minister noted Armenia faces a shifting energy landscape. Previously described as electricity-surplus, the nation may soon require additional generation capacity for AI facilities. Pashinyan reaffirmed Armenia's goal of achieving 100 percent energy independence through expanded solar power and storage capacity.

He also confirmed ongoing bilateral discussions with Azerbaijan on infrastructure connectivity, including electricity transmission lines, while indicating Armenia remains open to energy cooperation with neighboring countries including Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, and Georgia.
