Armenia considers 1,000 MW nuclear plant amid rising energy demand
PM Pashinyan does not rule out Armenia could need 1,000 MW nuclear power plant
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia may need to construct a nuclear power plant with capacity up to 1,000 megawatts to meet growing electricity demand driven by major investment projects and artificial intelligence facilities. The country shifted from an electricity surplus about 16 months ago to a current deficit due to approved development programs, Pashinyan said at a government briefing. Companies planning to establish AI facilities in Armenia are requesting clarity on electricity availability. While the government previously considered a smaller modular nuclear plant sufficient, changing demand projections may require a larger facility. Pashinyan said a 1,000 MW plant could be the most logical solution, though no final decision has been made. The government expects to decide on constructing a new nuclear unit by the end of 2027, with construction potentially taking seven to eight years before grid connection.
