Armenia Advances TRIPP Railway Project Despite Iran Concerns
TRIPP project will expand Armenia-Iran trade and serve Iran’s interests
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan defended the TRIPP project on July 9, saying its implementation will expand trade between Armenia and Iran while establishing a railway connection from the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea. The statement came after Iran's Ambassador to Armenia, Khalil Shogholami, raised concerns about potential U.S. presence near Iran's borders through the initiative. Pashinyan stressed that the project serves Iranian interests and invited transparent dialogue to address Tehran's concerns. He noted Armenia will collaborate with Iran, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, the European Union, Central Asian countries, and China on the initiative. The Armenian government has reportedly assured Iran that the project poses no security threat. Pashinyan said groundwork could begin as early as autumn.
