Armenia’s Areni-1 Cave added to UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List
Armenia has secured inclusion of Areni-1 Cave on UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List during the 48th World Heritage Committee session in Busan, South Korea. The cave, located in the Arpa River Valley in southern Armenia, is significant for its prehistoric and early winemaking evidence dating back six millennia.
The site's limestone chambers have preserved rare organic materials including wood, textiles, leather, and food residues due to ideal environmental conditions. The cave system spans approximately 850 square meters internally, with galleries extending over 40 meters into the cliff.
The nomination was developed through cooperation between Armenia's Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, the Areni-1 Cave Research Foundation, and the Armenian Enotourism Council. This achievement doubles Armenia's UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List entries from four to eight over the past three years.
