Ancient settlement discovered at the site of Academic City
Archaeologists have uncovered a significant ancient settlement in Yerevan's Silikyan district at the planned location of Academic City. Led by archaeologist Hakob Simonyan, excavations revealed an architectural complex of approximately 34 stone-built rooms, along with tools indicating advanced stone-working techniques. Researchers believe the site represents one of the oldest known settlements in the area, dating back thousands of years.
The discovery was presented March 24, 2026, during Armenia's official 2025 archaeological season summary. The Academic City Foundation, which is developing the future educational and scientific hub, confirmed it will integrate the archaeological heritage into its preservation and management plans. Simonyan emphasized the importance of collaborating with international laboratories for precise dating and further analysis. Excavations remain ongoing as specialists continue investigating the site's age, significance, and historical role in early human settlement patterns in the Yerevan region.
